Nestled in the lush Central Valley, Heredia blends small-city charm with vibrant Costa Rican culture. Known as “la Ciudad de las Flores” (the City of Flowers), Heredia is surrounded by rolling coffee plantations, misty mountain views, and a year-round spring-like climate. The streets are colorful with lively plazas, colonial architecture, open-air markets, and cafés serving some of the freshest coffee on the planet. Its proximity to the city center, quiet neighborhoods, and scenic trails makes Heredia a peaceful escape while the nearby Barva Volcano and Braulio Carrillo National Park offer unforgettable outdoor adventures.
Heredia is warm, walkable, safe, and filled with the friendly spirit Costa Rica is known for. With easy access to San José and the rest of the country, it’s the perfect home base for students and travelers who want authentic culture, natural beauty, and everyday Pura Vida living.

IPSL’s partner in Costa Rica delivers Spanish education grounded in immersive, student-centered
learning. Whether you choose private lessons or group classes, you’ll receive expert
instruction, individualized guidance, and a rich, immersive cultural experience that
enhances both language development and personal growth.

Immerse yourself in a volunteer service setting where you can put your community-building skills and passion to work. You’ll improve your Spanish in the process by working alongside locals and deepen your connections in the community. Volunteer placements are made considering your skills and interests as well as the needs of IPSL’s NGO and community partners.
You’ll live with a local homestay family in Heredia as part of the cultural and language immersion experience. All host families reside within walking distance of the school and provide students with regular opportunities to practice Spanish in everyday contexts. You’ll have a private room with a shared bath and living area. Full or partial board can be provided. The homestay program also contributes to the local community by providing financial support to host families and fostering cultural exchange among household members of all ages.

Every IPSL program is designed in collaboration with you, whether you’re earning a degree and want to spend some time abroad, or learning a language or serving others, we can customize that experience for your budget, time frame, expertise, and interests.
