2023 Year in Review

The Future at Westminster

This year was an exciting one for Westminster University. We completed the transition to Westminster University, broke ground on a new wellness facility for students, and made plans for Westminster at 150—our sesquicentennial celebration that will be held in 2025.

Class of 2023

Westminster University's 2023 commencement ceremony honored 320 undergraduate students and 134 graduate students who became the newest alumni of Westminster University. The event was held on Dumke Field and brought graduates and families to Westminster’s campus to celebrate the accomplishments of our Griffins. The class of 2023 included:

    • 18 First Scholars
    • 11 Veterans and ROTC
    • 54 student-athletes

Welcoming the Class of 2027

Westminster welcomed the Class of 2027 to campus with a convocation ceremony this fall. Student Body President Leah Stevenson encouraged students to “find their people” by being bold enough to seek out new opportunities.

Among the Class of 2027 are students from 24 countries and 32 states. They hail from nearly 170 high schools from across the country and world. Nearly 25% of students are the first in their family to attend university. The Class of 2027 is also the first cohort to begin their education as students of Westminster University, following the official university transition last summer.

Westminster on the Global Stage

Westminster alumni and faculty are at the heart of our community, but they also make a big impact on the global scale. This year, our Griffins reached massive audiences through social media and speaking engagements, were featured in documentaries, and made significant impacts through their work and research.

Westminster at 150

Westminster is looking ahead to 2025 when the university will be 150 years old. Working groups across campus made incredible progress in developing a strategic plan called Westminster at 150. The university is acting now for how Westminster will be for its sesquicentennial.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Westminster’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion had another successful year of creating academic programming and events that challenged students to think critically, explore new ideas, and help create an inclusive environment at Westminster and beyond. Some of these events included the Bastian Foundation Diversity Lecture Series, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, and the Unsung Hero Awards ceremony.

Expanding Our Wellness Initiative

In March, Westminster broke ground on the L.S. Skaggs Integrated Wellness Center, which is planned to open in Fall 2024. The center will empower students to live full and healthy lives by bringing together all of Westminster's wellness support services under one roof. Students will access resources that will help them improve their physical, emotional, intellectual, financial, social, spiritual, and environmental wellness.

Connecting with the Community

This year’s Westminster Weekend was an absolute blast. Alumni, faculty, staff, and current students connected at the annual reunion by watching sporting events, attending school receptions, and dancing under the stars.

The annual fundraising event, One Westminster Day, was a massive success thanks to the support of alumni, staff, and current students. There were over 1,100 gifts, which amounted to $240,000 that will be used to fund 10 campus projects.

This April, the Westminster Alumni Board welcomed students, alumni, and community members to campus to honor the recipients of the 2023 Alumni Awards. The honorees were distinguished for the way they exemplify Westminster’s values.

The Unsung Hero Awards honor members of the Westminster community who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting a diverse and inclusive community on campus and beyond. Honorees were recognized in January of this year, as part of Westminster’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Week.

Westmixer is a networking event that brings alumni together for a night to mingle and make connections within the Westminster community. This year’s event was held in May and brought together alumni from all years.
