Student researchers in the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business and Richard Haskell began a project in 2023 to prepare annual Deal Flow Reports for various states across the US, starting with Utah. Understanding “deal flow”—the flow of capital into privately held businesses by accredited investors, institutions, mergers and acquisitions, venture capital, private equity, and public offerings—provides key insights into which industry sectors, economic regions, and investment types are attracting investor attention in any given market. Entrepreneurs, investors, and their banking, accounting, and legal advisors rely on this information to guide key business decisions.

The project includes accessing data on private capital market transactions for privately held companies in any given state for a subject year, organizing that data by investor type, industry sector, and deal type, and making it available to private capital market participants. Though a range of data sources are utilized in the process, the use of PitchBook, a leading financial platform, is critical.
