Westminster University's Tax Clinic, which offers free tax and advocacy and stability services to members of the community, including low- to moderate-income individuals and families, was recently featured in a segment from KUTV2 News about the new "no tax on tips" law:
Jovana Sisovic, director of the Westminster Tax Clinic and assistant professor at Westminster University, said the law is a meaningful benefit for workers earning low base wages.
“By lowering taxable income, we are also lowering the tax and increasing the refund to the taxpayers,” Sisovic said.
The deduction applies to tip workers who are single or married filing jointly and meet the income requirements. Sisovic said the measure could provide much-needed relief to workers during a period of high inflation in an industry with high turnover and instability.
“It gives people a little bit of a break, catch up on life, and hopefully spend on their families or the bills they need to pay,” she said.
Sisovic said the Westminster Tax Clinic, which offers free tax preparation services to workers with low or moderate incomes, has already helped more than 1,000 tax filers take advantage of the no tax on tips provision.
