Quincy Stewart (’25) a chemistry major and Honors College student, was elected as the Associated Students of Westminster (ASW) president last spring and has plans to increase student engagement on campus through new events, traditions, and outreach. When taking on the position, Quincy had two focus areas for ASW: increasing student engagement and satisfaction with campus life and preparing ASW for a smooth transition when a new president is elected next year. Quincy believes the work ASW is currently doing will have a trickle-down effect on student engagement for next year's ASW participants. By increasing the number of involved students on campus, she believes that ASW will thrive in the coming years.
When asked about how she planned to increase student engagement and satisfaction on campus, Quincy highlighted the number and variety of events that ASW has held this semester, mentioning that students have a favorite category.
“Students love doing events that are related to their identities, so working with Student Engagement and Belonging and the different identity groups on campus has been really helpful. We also found that students like to do something hands-on, and they like to have a little food or beverage while they do it.”
Quincy has tried to listen to what students on campus are saying about events, citing that low turnout often means the student population isn’t excited about what was planned. Although almost all events have been successful, responding to student opinions is a large part of the effort to increase the presence of ASW and overall student satisfaction.
To accomplish her second goal of building a strong foundation for next year’s ASW, Quincy mentioned the upcoming elections and the number of available positions for the next academic year. The elections taking place in the spring semester will have real campaign events to allow the campus community to learn about candidates and their goals. Quincy encourages interested students to get involved in ASW or speak with current members to learn about the 4 election-based roles and the positions that will become available.
“I think a lot of students live in a box where they think that if they haven't been involved in ASW from the start of the year, they can't get involved at all. We want to make sure that people know that they can get involved at any point and we're always happy to have more members.”
Quincy says that ASW has multiple upcoming events included in Stress Less Week that students should look out for, including a late-night study session on December 10, free massages on December 11, and a succulent potting session on December 12. She also recommends that students attend late night breakfast on Tuesday, December 11, as a great chance to learn more about faculty, staff, and fellow students on campus.
