The Westminster University Testing Center assists students and community members with adaptive testing accommodations, make-up exams, proctored exams, external testing opportunities, and an assistive technology library.

Types of Exams

Contact the Testing Center for more information about adaptive, make-up, CLEP, and FLATS exams. Additional testing services may be available upon request.

Adaptive Testing

Adaptive testing is available to Westminster students who have set up their accommodations through Student Disability Services. Common accommodations include extended time and reduced distractions.

Make-up Exams

Make-up exams are available to students who are unable to take an exam in class as scheduled due to planned or unplanned absences.

CLEP

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests help students receive college credit for knowledge they have already acquired. CLEP exams cover introductory level college course material in 34 subjects.

FLATS

BYU’s Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (FLATS) exam helps students earn college credit for language skills they already possess. FLATS is regionally accredited. Exam scores may not be accepted by all institutions.

Testing Center staff cannot access the FLATS and CLEP exams to gauge their difficulty. However, the FLATS exam is designed to accommodate test takers whose language skills were acquired outside of a classroom environment.

Scheduling an Exam

Contact the Testing Center to ask about other exam types and to discuss your testing/proctoring needs. All exam appointments must be scheduled at least one business day in advance (a Monday exam appointment must be scheduled before the Testing Center closes on the previous Friday).

Westminster students will not be scheduled until the Testing Center receives an exam request from your professor. If your professor contacts the Testing Center before you do, staff will reach out to you via email to schedule your exam.

Community members and students attending other institutions will be charged a $35 proctoring fee, which must be paid prior to an exam appointment. Payment can be submitted through the Westminster University Cashier’s Office. If you pay in person, ask for a receipt and bring it to your exam appointment. If you pay over the phone, ask the cashier to email your receipt to testingcenter@westminsteru.edu

To visit the Testing Center before your appointment, email testingcenter@westminsteru.edu to set up a specific visiting time.

  1. Meet with Student Disability Services to confirm that your documentation for the semester has been completed and accommodations letters have been sent to your professors.
  2. Speak with your professors and ask them to submit a Faculty Exam Request Forms for every test you will be expected to take.
  3. Contact the Testing Center to schedule an exam appointment:
  1. Speak with your professor and ask them to submit a Faculty Exam Request for the test/class date you will miss.
  2. Contact the Testing Center to schedule an exam appointment:
  1. Speak with your academic advisor or the Registrar’s Office to determine which CLEP exam will provide the course credits you need and whether there are any university deadlines to consider. You can find basic information about external credit options in the Academic Catalog.
  2. Register for the appropriate CLEP exam online. You must pay a $97 fee to finalize your registration. Modern States, a nonprofit organization, provides free study materials for many CLEP subjects and allows students to earn vouchers to cover the cost of the test registration fee. Contact the Testing Center with questions.
  3. You'll receive an email message containing your registration ticket. Forward this to the Testing Center at testingcenter@westminsteru.edu and request an exam appointment.
  4. When you finalize your testing appointment, Testing Center staff will email a temporary parking pass to you. Print the parking pass and place it on your dashboard.
  1. Speak with your academic advisor or the Registrar’s Office to confirm that the FLATS exam will meet your academic needs. You can find basic information about external credit options in the Academic Catalog.
  2. Register for the FLATS exam online. You must pay a $50 fee to finalize your registration. Some language exams are only offered on paper and require an additional $25 fee:
    • Aymara
    • Cakchiquel
    • Guarani
    • Maori
    • Rarotongan
    • Welsh
  3. FLATS will forward your information to the Testing Center and they will contact you to schedule an appointment.

Exam Procedures

On the day of your appointment, plan to follow these steps:

  1. Head to the Testing Center, located in the basement of Giovale Library.
    • Try to arrive at or before your appointment time.
    • If you are more than 15 minutes late without contacting the Testing Center, you will have time deducted from your exam.
    • If you are more than 1 hour late without contacting the Testing Center, your appointment will be cancelled, and your professor will be notified.
  2. Present Testing Center staff with your photo ID.
    • For Westminster course exams, your student ID is sufficient.
    • For CLEP and FLATS exams, your ID must be government-issued (e.g., state ID, driver's license, passport).
  3. Sign in at the front desk.
  4. Review the Testing Center Rules and Code of Conduct once each academic year.
  5. Hand Testing Center staff your cell phone and any other wearable/portable electronic devices you have with you. These items will be stored behind the front desk.
  6. Set all other personal belongings in the waiting area.
  7. Review exam instructions and allowed materials with Testing Center staff.
  8. Take your exam.
  9. When the exam is complete, return all test materials to Testing Center staff.
  10. Sign out at the front desk.
  11. Testing Center staff will return your cell phone/electronics and submit your completed exam to your professor.

To authorize a student to take a make-up or accommodations-related exam in the Testing Center, complete these steps:

  1. Fill out a Faculty Exam Request Form. Testing Center staff will not schedule a student’s requested test appointment until you submit a Faculty Exam Request form. When setting test deadlines for your students, remember that all exam appointments must be scheduled at least one business day in advance.
  2. Receive and acknowledge any follow-up emails from the Testing Center regarding exam administration and scheduling. Testing Center staff will contact you when:
    1. Your exam request is received.
    2. Your student has scheduled or requested an appointment.
    3. We have not received a copy of an exam from you.
    4. Your student has completed an exam.
    5. Your student has missed an exam appointment.
    6. There are technical difficulties with an exam.
    7. Your student’s exam is interrupted or stopped for any reason.
  3. For exams administered outside of Canvas, submit a copy of the exam to the Testing Center at least one day prior to your student’s scheduled appointment. Physical exams are held in a locked filing cabinet until the student’s appointment time. Digital exam copies are stored on the Testing Center Coordinator’s computer and are deleted after they have been administered.

Students are actively monitored during all exam appointments. Testing Center camera footage can also be used to review unusual behavior after an appointment has concluded.

All completed exams will be delivered according to your specifications. Paper exams are placed inside an envelope which is then double-sealed and signed.

Test-taking Information for Westminster Students

Bring a government-issued photo ID and any other materials your professor allows for the exam. Only professor-approved materials, accommodations-related materials, and drinks with lids are allowed in the testing area.

The Testing Center provides some supplies for use during testing:

  • Headphones
  • Ear plugs
  • Noise-cancelling headphones
  • White noise machines
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Scratch paper (lined and unlined)

Using your own laptop for a test instead of a Testing Center computer depends on your professor’s preferences. Ask your professor to specify whether your personal laptop is acceptable when they submit their exam request to the Testing Center.

All Testing Center computers have Lockdown Browser installed, accessible from the desktop.

The Testing Center can help you reschedule any exam if the new appointment time falls within the testing deadlines established by your professor. If you need to reschedule after the original deadline has passed, please contact your professor to request an extension prior to contacting the Testing Center.

Restroom Use During Exams

For most exams, you are free to use the restroom, however, you will need to let Testing Center staff know and you will not be given access to your cell phone or other personal belongings until your test has been completed.

Restroom breaks are permitted for all CLEP exams, but they will cut into your testing time.

The FLATS exam does not allow breaks of any kind. Testing Center staff will give you an opportunity to use the restroom prior to beginning the exam.

Borrowing Assistive Technology for Class

The Testing Center has a small stock of assistive technology for any student to check out for use in or out of the classroom. Priority is given to students whose accommodations indicate a specific need for these tools.

  • C-Pen Reader 3 reading pen
  • Audio recorders
  • USB microphones
  • USB cameras
