Jessica Kunzer

Jessica Kunzer uses passion and knowledge to represent the best outdoor brands

by Lily Wolfe (’18)

Jessica Kunzer (MBA ’11) has been a leader in the marketing and communication industry for over a decade. Originally interested in the performing arts, Jessica blends her passions for storytelling and the outdoors with her writing and speaking skills to create effective communication strategies for Mountain Sports International (MSI), a Salt Lake-based firm that specializes in brand strategy, event production, and experiential marketing. As MSI’s director of marketing and communications, Jessica works with clients such as The North Face, Red Bull, Lexus, and Subaru to do experiential and event-multisensory marketing.

“I make sure consumers feel that the brand is supporting a lifestyle they want,” says Jessica. She is at the forefront of creating memorable experiences that connect brands with their audience through out-of-the-box marketing campaigns, including innovative competitions and events.

The skills Jessica brings to MSI are writing, organization, and even basic algebra to calculate budgets and growth formulas. All her skills contribute to her goals of being a better friend, community member, and leader.

“I am always looking to grow my skill set,” says Jessica. “I always ask myself how I can improve the larger business plan of MSI through current trends and adapting new strategies.”

Jessica first entered the communications world when she took a job as the director of communications at Ski Utah. As the founder of Ski Utah’s first magazine, Jessica found herself in many leadership roles. With little background in management, she decided earning an MBA was the right path to become a more effective leader and develop skills in finance and business operations.

“When I decided to get my MBA, I originally just applied to the U  of Utah ” says Jessica. “I was then drawn to Westminster’s MBA program because of the close community and devotion of faculty.” The MBA program also gave her the flexibility to continue working full-time while earning her degree.

Five years after graduating from Westminster with her MBA, Jessica is still an active member within the Westminster community as a facilitator with the MBA Master Track program, a mentoring program for graduate students. Program participants meet monthly with a mentor to discuss individual career and life challenges, as well as gain exposure to corporate communications companies in small-group settings. As a facilitator, Jessica helps participants develop interdisciplinary skills and discuss workplace demands while learning from other facilitators and participants.
