SALT LAKE CITY — Today, Westminster University adds 3 new competitive sports teams to its Mountain Sports program, part of Westminster’s ongoing commitment to hands-on education and outdoor learning. To celebrate the expansion of this unique initiative, the university invites media and the community to attend a kick-off party on Thursday, November 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Climbing Wall in the Dolores Doré Eccles Health, Wellness, and Athletic Center (HWAC) on campus.
Guests at the event will meet Westminster’s mountain sports coaches and student-athletes, who bring enthusiasm and expertise to the university's existing snowboard team and new teams in freeskiing, climbing, and mountain biking. The evening will feature a cocktail reception where attendees can learn about the program’s vision, team goals, and plans for future student organizations.
Westminster provides all students with accessible opportunities to experience mountains surrounding Salt Lake City through its integrative curriculum and outdoor programs. Westminster's student-athletes are part of varsity-level athletics teams that offer a platform to showcase competitive abilities while gaining a world-class education. Along with training at facilities and locations along the Wasatch Front, students can access scholarships, sports psychology sessions, and more.
“Westminster’s Mountain Sports program is designed to foster athleticism, resilience, and camaraderie in one of the best outdoor environments in the country,” said Jessica Brazell-Brayboy, Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics. “Our students are adventurers, and we are thrilled to support their ambitions through these new offerings.”
“It’s an amazing time to be at Westminster!” said Abram Shackleford, a student and an incoming member of the climbing team. “I’m looking forward to competing at this level again, and being part of the first group to build up our climbing program is really exciting. I’m grateful for the support and look forward to what’s next for my climbing as well as climbing here at the school.”
