Scholarships are awarded based on auditions to students interested in majoring, minoring, or participating in music courses, ensembles, or private lessons. Thanks to the generous support by the Florence J. Gillmor Foundation, Westminster Support Foundation, and the Gore Endowment for Music, students enrolled in the Music program at Westminster University receive a wide range of scholarships and unique performance opportunities.

If you have questions about auditions or the music scholarship, contact the Music program by phone (801.832.2379) or email (music@westminsteru.edu).

Audition Steps

1. Apply to Westminster

Before you can audition, you must submit an application for admission to Westminster. If you're interested in being considered for a performing arts scholarship, select “Yes” on the application when asked if you're interested in pursuing music, dance, or theatre. If you submitted your application for admission and did not indicate that you would like to audition for a performing arts scholarship, update your application in the application portal or email admission@westminsteru.edu and ask for your application to be updated.

2. Audition

Once you've submitted your Westminster application, complete the performing arts audition form on your performing arts checklist in the application portal. You will also be able to schedule an in-person audition or submit a virtual audition portfolio through your application portal.

3. What to Expect

In-Person Auditions

Westminster's in-person auditions allow applicants to work directly with Westminster performing arts faculty, tour our facilities and meet current students. Depending on your musical discipline, please prepare the following for your in-person auditions.

  • Vocal and Musical Theatre: 2 contrasting songs of your choice; repertoire from classical art song and musical theater styles are highly recommended; 1 popular or jazz cover is acceptable.
  • Piano: 2 solo pieces of your choice: a classical sonata movement and a solo work from the 19th, 20th, or 21st century work is recommended.
  • Winds, Brass, Percussion: 2 contrasting pieces of your choice.
  • Strings: 2 contrasting pieces of your choice; 1 solo movement by J.S. Bach is highly encouraged but not required.
  • Jazz: 2 contrasting pieces of your choice including 1 transcription.
  • Composition, Songwriting, Music Technology: 2 recordings or (if applicable) scores of recently completed works. This could be a recording that you produced, recorded, or mixed, an instrument you have built, an original song you wrote, some sort of performance with live electronics, music or sound design for a collaborative or multimedia project, or any other demonstration of your proficiency and interest in music technology.

If you have multiple interests, please upload separate materials for each of your interests.

If you require an accompanist, please provide music that is legible and bound or prepared for a 3-ring binder. Alternatively, you can bring a recording or track of the accompaniment to pair with our speaker.

Virtual Auditions

For those unable to attend our live auditions, we offer the ability to submit a pre-recorded audition video. Video submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis, in alignment with the in-person audition dates.
