The Theatre Arts program is dedicated to creating the academic and artistic contexts that help you master various aspects of theatrical work, investigate how theatre impacts and is informed by culture and community, and cultivate healthy habits that facilitate powerful theatre work. When you graduate, you will be prepared for entry into graduate studies or professional work.

The Theatre Arts program offers a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree with an emphasis in performance or production and design, a bachelor of arts (BA) in theatre, and a theatre minor.

Productions

The Theatre Arts program produces 4 productions a year, the One-Act Festival, and the Classical Greek Theatre Festival. All productions provide opportunities onstage and offstage for theatre arts majors, minors, and the Westminster community.

Each production season consists of a mix of classic and contemporary plays, musicals, original plays, and devised works that provoke thought and conversation about socially relevant issues while educating and entertaining audiences.

Great Salt Lake Fringe

The Great Salt Lake Fringe (GSLF) Festival was founded by Theatre Arts program faculty Michael and Nina Vought and is a member of the U.S. Association of Fringe Festivals. GSLF provides opportunities for experimental theatre and subject matter, with Westminster alumni and students regularly serving as key staff members and volunteers in addition to regularly presenting or premiering their original works at GSLF. To date, the festivals have paid out over $50,000 to 300+ artists, employed 100+ young people as staff and volunteers, and presented the world premiere of 50+ original productions.

Pinnacle Acting Company

Pinnacle Acting Company, founded by Theater Arts program faculty Jared Larkin and Melanie Nelson, produces classic and contemporary classic theatre with emphasis on award-winning plays. Students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Salt Lake City theatre community regularly work with the company.

Classical Greek Theatre Festival

The Classical Greek Theatre Festival is an annual theatrical event at Westminster created to introduce and sustain the appreciation of ancient Greek theatre throughout Utah communities and campuses. Theatre program students regularly perform, design, build, and stage manage for the festival.

Get Involved

Auditions for the new academic year are held the week prior to the start of fall semester. Casting priority goes to theatre arts majors, but all Westminster students are welcome to audition. Incoming students will be contacted by the program with information to prepare for auditions. Current non-majors who are interested in auditioning and would like information about upcoming or available opportunities can email Jared Larkin (jlarkin@westminsteru.edu), head of acting.

It takes a large team to make Westminster productions happen. On average, for every actor onstage, there are at least 5 technicians who worked behind the scenes. Behind the scenes opportunities include carpentry, welding, scenic painting, sewing, and some run crew opportunities. Students interested in volunteering behind the scenes can email Spencer Potter (spotter@westminsteru.edu), head of production and design.

The Westminster Theatre Society is a student organization dedicated to theatre and the people who love it. The Theatre Society provides events and activities for the Westminster community, engages in community service, and creates opportunities for students to learn and grow in the field of theatre. Each May, the Theatre Society produces a student-directed show for the campus community.

Student Perspective

Maya

Maya

Maya's ('22) favorite thing about Westminster’s Theatre Arts program is that students don’t just attend lectures to be told about their chosen field of study, they get to create theoretical designs, stage-manage shows, create scenery and costumes, and more, learning through experience. Maya is working towards the bachelor of fine arts degree, pursuing the production and design emphasis and working towards earning an Honors certificate. In her free time, Maya enjoys painting, spending time in the commons with my friends, knitting, and exploring the local area.

Evan

Evan

Evan ('21) came to Westminster to pursue the bachelor of arts degree with an informal emphasis in directing as well as an Honors certificate. Their favorite part of pursuing the program here is that Westminster has allowed them to make valuable connections with people who have a willingness to work hard to create the shows on campus. Evan’s favorite class, Devised Theatre, helped them realize the importance of this devotion and the importance of collaboration for the field. In their free time, Evan loves to spend time in the Jewett Center and attend ASW events. Evan has also had time to pursue work independently, recently directing a show for Sasquatch Theatre Company in December 2019.

Florence J. Gillmor Hall Expansion

Florence J. Gillmor Hall, an expansion to the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts, transforms the experience of performing arts students with enhanced classroom, rehearsal, and performance spaces. To better serve theatre students, the expansion includes:

  • enlarged scene and costume shops, increasing the capacity for production services and teaching;
  • a new rehearsal space that accommodates acting classes during the day and production rehearsals in the evenings, leaving performance spaces more available for set construction, design, and technology courses; and
  • new private practice rooms, shared with music students, providing space for acting students to rehearse class assignments and audition materials.
