About
Art Shimata has been at Westminster since July 2012. He is originally from Hawaii.
He brings a different attitude to anesthesia and teaching anesthesia at Westminster
College. He is known for being approachable and friendly, yet firm. He is known for
challenging his students, but provides a great resource to help them understand the
content. Art's goal is to provide an education that will allow graduating students
to practice anesthesia safely. Although anesthesia courses are very difficult, Art
feels that they are fair, and he is always willing to listen to his students. Art
has been incorporating student center learning techniques since 2013 into his classroom,
which has been very successful.
Art Shimata has been in practice since 2002, after graduating from Gonzaga University
with his Masters in Anesthesia Education. Additionally, Art obtained his Doctorate
in Nurse Anesthesia Practice from Midwestern in 2018. He owns his own business where
he is able to currently practice anesthesia. Art has also worked at Ogden Regional
Medical Center in Ut., Parker Adventist Hospital in CO., Rose Medical Center in CO,
along with many other locum assignments throughout UT, CO, WA, KS, TX, and NM. Additionally,
Art was an Army officer doing anesthesia for the military for several years. Art has
practiced in many different settings to include a collaborative Anesthesiologist/Certified
Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), CRNA only, and even solo practice. He has done
all types of cases and at one time even practice in the area of chronic pain management.
Art has 6 children all of which are grown. Art has been happily married to Terri since
1989. He has a Maltese named Joey. He loves to go camping, and ride his RZR in Moab
and other places. However, if you really want to distract him in class, get him to
talk about surfing (remember you may not get important test information if you do
this:)). I know you will enjoy his classes and learn a thing or two or three or……..
