I’m pleased to share with the Westminster community that fundraising and design have been completed for our newest campus facility, the L. S. Skaggs Integrated Wellness Center (IWC). This building represents a significant step forward in Westminster’s ability to support the overall well-being of our students, as outlined in the Integrated Wellness pillar of our Westminster 150 initiative. Following the lead grant agreement made by The ALSAM Foundation in June 2021, the design process for the L. S. Skaggs IWC has taken place over the past 18 months.
The 11,250 sq. ft. facility will be located on 1300 East, just south of the Dolores Doré Eccles Ceramics Center, and will replace three college-owned homes that currently occupy the space. The L. S. Skaggs IWC will be the new home of Student Health Services, the Counseling Center, the Office for Global Peace and Spirituality, and support spaces for the Center for Financial Wellness and the Purple Basket, bringing vital student support functions all together under one roof. A teaching and demonstration kitchen, featuring multiple cooktops and stations, will create opportunities for nutritional education and instruction. The building will wrap around an inner courtyard with space for relaxation, meditation, gardening, and other mindfulness activities.
I’m grateful for the excellent work done by our IWC Steering Committee: Kenton Gregory, Traci Siriprathane, Laura Iverson-Bastiani, Daniel Lewis, and Glenn Smith, who served as committee chair. I also want to recognize the assistance of Derek Payne and Mallory Platt, our partners at VCBO Architecture, and the voices of many partners from across campus that have provided invaluable guidance as we’ve worked to determine the building’s programming and design.
Please join us for a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, March 16 at 4:00 p.m. at the building’s future location. A reception in the Tanner Atrium will follow.
