The Accounting Program at Westminster University
Give yourself the flexibility to pursue a career in accounting or other areas of business you are passionate about. Through Westminster University’s Accounting program, you will be able to read, interpret, and utilize financial data to make sound decisions, critically analyzing the financial transactions that make business possible.
The Accounting program offers students the ability to explore different areas of accounting by engaging in in-class and out-of-class opportunities. Additionally, the diversity and flexibility of the program allow you to tailor your degree, including your choice of pursuing the bachelor of science or bachelor of arts degree track based on your business interests.
Who the Accounting Program Is For
Students in the Accounting program are interested in business and are looking for the flexibility to apply their knowledge in multiple areas. Accounting is characterized by its financial security and opportunities for advancement and also offers a multitude of directions in which you may choose to take your career.
What You'll Learn in the Accounting Program
The program of study is designed to develop a student’s ability to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of relevant professional standards and the regulatory environment
within the core accounting areas:Financial accounting
- Cost accounting
- Tax
- Audit
- Use technology to facilitate and enhance accounting and financial reporting processes
- Perform research skills and methodology using appropriate and relevant standards, rules, laws, and principles required to make sound business judgments
- Communicate clearly and concisely when conveying relevant financial and related non-financial information so that decision makers can make informed decisions

Accelerated Programs and Partnerships
Several undergraduate programs at Westminster feature an accelerated track or partnership that allows our graduates to earn a graduate degree as quickly as possible.
Plan of Study for the Accounting Program
You will have the choice to pursue the Accounting program through one of 2 degree tracks based on your interests. Both tracks require the completion of the common business core, which is designed to develop skills in all functional areas of business.
ACCOUNTING Degree Options
Bachelor of Science in Accounting
If you choose to pursue the bachelor of science degree, in addition to accounting specific courses you will also be required to gain professional experience through an internship.
Bachelor of Arts in Accounting
If you choose to pursue the bachelor of arts degree, you will complete accounting specific courses as well as either an academic minor outside of the School of Business or world language credits. You will also be required to gain professional experience through an internship.
If you choose to pursue the world language credits, you can either take credits of a single world language or combine credits of a single world language with a May Term Study Experience or an international study tour transferred from an accredited college/university.
ACCOUNTING Testing Requirements
You will be required to complete the ETS Major Field Test in Business before you are eligible to graduate. If you wish to qualify to sit for the CPA examination, you will need to complete additional graduate work in business and accounting.
ACCOUNTING Experential Opportunities
You are encouraged to participate in the Westminster Tax Clinic to gain professional experience while serving your community. This Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides assistance to low-to-moderate income families, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their tax returns. The clinic prepared over 2000 returns in 2019 for low and moderate-income individuals.

If you wish to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination in Utah or many other states, you will need to complete additional graduate studies. By completing Westminster’s Accounting program, you will have the educational background and prerequisites necessary to be successful in Westminster's Master of Accountancy or Master of Business Administration (with an accounting certificate) programs.
